Hollenberg Pony Express Station
Client: Kansas State Historical Society
Site: Hanover, Kansas
The Collaborative completed a historical and architectural evaluation of what is thought to be the last relatively unaltered Pony Express station in the country. At the same time, the firm completed an evaluation of the physical condition of the building materials and systems, followed by recommendations for stabilizing and repairing deterioration. The building was constructed during a relatively short time period, but used several different structural systems, including log, post and beam, board-on-board, and stud frame. Elements from each phase were connected and/or rested against elements of previous phases, creating a complex stabilization problem akin to evaluating a “pick-up-sticks” pile. This Historic Structures Report is one element in the Kansas Historic Sites Master Plan.
