Mountain Casino Properties retained the Collaborative, inc. to design a new Gilpin Hotel and Casino on the site of the original historic structure. This highly complex project involved the renovation of an existing 19th-century hotel that had been seriously damaged by fire, and the construction of a major new addition, for a total of 21,000 square feet. In addition to the complexities of working in and around a fragile historic building, this site also backed to a steep mountain slope in the historic mining community of Central City, Colorado. New Colorado gaming regulations were also a driving force on this project, and an evolving market profile required flexibility in design. The firm’s depth of experience in historic preservation, mountain development, and the design of gaming venues allowed the project to proceed with both speed and creativity. Working drawings were completed in less than 45 days and construction from foundation to the facility’s grand opening was fast tracked.
