Boulder Firehouse No. 2

Client: Boulder Parks and Recreation Department

Site: Boulder, Colorado

Boulder Firehouse No. 2, commonly known as the Pottery Lab, is one of Boulder’s earliest historic firehouses and the only one still standing. It is one of the oldest buildings in the University Hill neighborhood. The City of Boulder Parks and Recreation Department presently owns the building and uses it to house their ceramics program. This use has required very little alteration of the building. There was, however, significant deterioration to the brick, as well as to fascias, eaves, soffits, and other woodwork from uncontrolled drainage. The firm evaluated the structural system and the physical condition of the building materials. Recommendations were made for the stabilization and repair of damage to the building. The second phase of this project included a variety of work items involved with masonry repair and epoxy saturation of deteriorated wood. Delineation of repair procedures allowed the building to be continually used during construction.
